Short Story Friday: Just Live Your Life

She'd thought the key to rolling the wheels of life successfully, was strict adherence to parental rules.
"Sarah, I sent you to school to learn how to read and write. Yet, you can't spell your name?" Her father said during her early years in primary school.

Determined, Sarah drank from the cup of seriousness, and wore the garment of seriousness. When she could read and write, it soon dawned on her that knowing how to read and write was not enough.
"Sarah, you took 15th position in your class. That's very poor. You'd better start reading your books. Is it not your mate that took the first position?" Her mother said.
Sarah married her books.

She soon came top. She'd made her parents proud.
But then, she realized there was always something new to be done.
"Sarah, forget Theatre Art. You have to study Economics."

She got the admission to study the course her parents chose for her.
"Sarah, I know we are not going with you to school. Stay away from boys. Don't go close to them. They'll destroy your future."

Sarah took the warning with fear. She stayed away from men. She graduated five years after.
She came home with John one cool evening, on a saturday. She'd started working. When John had gone, they said to her.

"Sarah, you cannot marry that boy. He is not from our tribe. You must marry from our tribe."
Broken hearted, but she got no choice.

She came home with another. Cyril was from their tribe. Few weeks later, they called her.
"Sarah, we have conducted a private investigation on Cyril and his family. His family is ungodly and evil. You cannot marry him."

Sarah loved Cyril, but she had to obey her parents.
Five years later, she introduced Reuben to them. Reuben was also from their tribe. She was now thirty-four years in age. She loved Reuben, far more than she'd ever loved.

"Sarah, we have investigated him. He is from a good family. But you see, it goes beyond that. He is from the low class. His family is far below our class. He can't take care of you. So, you cannot marry him." His father told her.

"No, daddy! Not again! I'll marry him." She protested
"Certainly not when I'm still alive. My dear, you will not. Read my lips." her mother said.
She walked away from them. First time she ever did that.
Few months later, she was pregnant for Reuben.

"Sarah, you'll abort that thing you're carrying. Do not think we would allow you marry him because you're pregnant. Over my dead body." The father warned.

Sarah had pleaded, did all she could, for them to allow her marry Reuben. But they never agreed. They stealthily arranged with the family doctor, who drugged Sarah when she visited the hospital, and under anaesthetics, removed the four months baby. By the time Sarah woke up, she was surrounded by her parents and the doctor.

"Sarah, we're sorry, but we did this for your own good. Reuben is not good for our status."
Sarah lived with that trauma for two years, until she met Stanley. Stanley made her see reasons to live again. He was her best friend. But he was not from her tribe.

"Sarah, Stanley is not from our tribe. And you know it. Why did you bring him to us? We will not allow you to marry..."

"Not on your life!" She rose on her feet, "Haven't you done enough harm to me. I'm now 36. All my mates are married. You either accept Stan, or you lose me forever!"
"Sarah!"

"Don't you Sarah me! Do you know the hell I've been through?" Tears filled her face. "Do you? Do you know what it feels to lose a child you had so wanted? Do you know what it feels to be single at my age? Do you know what it means to be lonely?"

Silence loomed. One could have heard a pin-drop, as she walked into her room.
Ten minutes later, she was out with her bags.
"Where are you going?" They chorused.
"To Stan. I'm leaving your house for you"
Her mum blocked her way. "Mum, if you know what's good for you, leave my way now. Or you'll regret what I'll do to yo. Try me." She took a step. Her mum held her. She angrily shoved her off and the mum fell hard on the floor. Her dad stood, bewildered, as Sarah went away.

Two months later, the parents begged her to fix a date for proper wedding, as Sarah's stay with Stanley was more damaging to their status.
Finally, Sarah got married to Stan. Six years in marriage, she's without a child. She cannot conceive a child, because the abortion she did years ago, damaged her womb.

Advice shouldn't be forced. Choice is heaven's gift to humanity that should be respected. Until you say no to dictatorial advice, your freedom remains held in chains, and could cause you a problem you'll ever live to regret. You have your own brain: USE IT! Decide your own future. Take advice, only when it's wise. Only you will tell your life story when time demands for it. You are the one that will be judged by what you become in future, no one would care to know who your advisers were, and no one would judge those that may have led you astray. Follow your dreams, dear. It's your own World!
