Steve Nicol: Liverpool Victory is next season

Former player Steve Nicol believes Liverpool need to concentrate on only the league next season, in order for them to return to their former heights.
The 3-1 defeat at Southampton, damaged their slim chances of claiming a Champions League spot. They now sit one place – seventh – and three points behind local rival’s Everton, who also have a game in hand.
Nicol said: “If they don’t get into the Europa League next season it will be the best thing for them. They need to concentrate in the league.
“After watching them away from home at Southampton, I don’t think they’ll get that fifth.”
It was Brendan Rodgers second loss in six games and the fomer Scottish international feels the manager has to take some of the blame.
He added: “I think Brendan got it wrong when he played Phillippe Coutinho as one of the wide players of the midfield four. He was always going to struggle defensively. You’re always going to be open for attacks because Coutinho doesn’t defend.”
