Pendulum @Delemomodu OVATION INTERNATIONAL: 20 YEARS OF CELEBRATING AFRICA
Fellow Africans, please, join me in
thanking God for this baby of circumstance that was born through some
excruciating pain 20 years ago in the city of London. The genesis of
Ovation International could only have been by divine conception. I won’t
know any other way to describe it. The original idea was first ignited
after my controversial exit from my high flying job as the Editor of
Nigeria’s foremost celebrity journal, Classique magazine, owned by May
Ellen Ezekiel Mofe-Damijo, now of blessed memory. That is a story for
another day.
My first impulse was to birth my own
magazine, like most journalists would. There is nothing more addictive
than journalism, the reason most journalists find it inconceivable to
try other trades. So, I decided it was time to challenge fate and come
up with a journal that would mirror the lifestyle of the rich and
famous. There were already several such publications in circulation,
including Prime People, Vintage People, Fame, Today’s Choice, Climax,
Quality, Classique, Poise, and so on. There was also a very popular
romance magazine called Hints which was owned by Dr Ibe Kachikwu and
Edited by Mr Kayode Ajala. But I felt, there was enough space for an
authoritative magazine for newsmakers.

Pendulum @DeleMomodu: THE MINISTERS ARE WORKING BUT INFORMATION IS SCANTY
For those that miss the last week pendulum from the master himself, read below before this week's write-up comes online: Happy Reading
Fellow Nigerians, I have been greatly troubled by the spate of criticisms and vicious attacks against the Buhari government. You cannot blame me. I was one of those who went all out to campaign for the change movement. Naturally, we must take credit for whatever success President Buhari achieves and face the public odium for its failure, God forbid. My fervent prayer had been that Buhari will not fail because the disgrace would be too monumental for some of us.
I decided to go on a solo rescue mission hoping to make my modest contribution in the process. What I discovered through my interactions with some of our leaders is that majority have been too scared of talking for whatever reason. My unlettered mum used to tell me a Yoruba adage that “lack of effective communication is the beginning of foolishness and backwardness.
I have since had the opportunity of chatting hither and tither with some of the key cabinet members, officially and unofficially and realised that this government should jettison propaganda and let each Ministry provide its road maps to Nigerians. For example, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola is a super technocrat who has been saddled with so much. After our one hour long telephone conversation, he allayed my fears substantially on the intractable power problems in our country. He is meticulously plotting his paths through the labyrinth of electrical wilderness. Very soon, he believes, we shall enjoy some relief. He is not someone to be fazed on intimidated by daunting challenges.
Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi is another Minister in charge of one of the most essential sectors of our economy, transportation. In the last few weeks, he’s been able to breakdown his plans and activities. I was very impressed when he acknowledged the foundation laid by former President Goodluck Jonathan and how the Buhari government would work assiduously to bring our transportation to its most modern level ever. His ideas are ambitious but practical.

I have been mostly worried about the petroleum sector. The long queues have returned with a vengeance. The price of oil has fallen globally and our fattest cash cow has been growing leaner. Dr Ibe Kachikwu is a brainbox I have known for decades. They don’t get better than him in that industry. What then is the problem? To change any system is not always very simple. Those who used to make easy money would do anything and everything to frustrate the changer. My probe revealed some of the obstacles militating against this government but slowly and steadily hope is rising.
Change is in the air. Although it has been slow in coming it is gratifying to note that the patience of the longsuffering Nigerian masses, especially in the area of delivery of petroleum products is going to be rewarded after all. I’m willing to wait a little more for the magic wand to blossom.

I Won't Act Nude For Money --- @LydiaEires
Fast-rising actress and entrepreneur, Lydia Eires from Eshan Central in Edo State, is one person to watch out for in the movie industry. the screen diva recently had a chat with E24-7 MAGAZINE’S where she speaks on her career, challenges of up-comers in the industry amongst other issues. Excerpts…
How did acting start for you?
It’s a long story though. I have always had the dream of studying
Theatre Arts in School and as God would have it, I gained admission
into Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State where I studied Theatre
and Media Art. Though I studied Theatre Art in school, I never wanted to
practice at first, but wanted to do business. And because of the
numerous stories I used to hear about Directors and Producers wanting to
sleep with ladies in exchange for roles, I was skeptical about getting
involved in movies. But one fateful day, my friend, Vivian Spears,
called me that some movie-makers would like to use my shop where I was
selling clothes and fashion accessories for a shoot. When they came,
there was this lady that was playing the role but she wasn’t doing it
well, so I complained about it and even asked the director if she was
auditioned for the role or not. The director then asked me if I could do
it because they had done like four takes already. At first, I was
cautious, because I didn’t want it to seem like I was trying to take the
girl’s job; but the director insisted that I should try it out. I
agreed with him and I told him I will show the lady how to perfect the
role. I did it and even the lady liked it and even told me to do it.
After that, the Director asked me if I had been acting before, so I told
him no, though I had done some stage plays before while in school. To
my surprise, he gave me a script where I have to act in 22 scenes. That
movie was titled ‘Alingo Babes.’ I can remember that while on set, there
was a lady that walked up to me and asked me how long I’d been in
Nollywood. I told her I was just a starter, so she told me that if I
want to have my face on the movie poster, I would have to pay the
producer N20,000 for that. I was worried and I asked why I had to pay
the producer for that, when I was not even being paid for the job. She
said that’s how the industry works, but I refused to pay. However, to my
surprise, when the movie and all posters came out, I was on the poster
and the lady was missing. Since then, I believe more in God with all I
do in the industry. That first job paved the way for many others for me.Saturday, 7 November 2015
Pendulum @DeleMomodu: On The Trail of Madame Diezani
Fellow Nigerians, let me tell you about my James Bond stunts in this season of the sensational SPECTRE movie. Yes. The news of the arrest of former strong woman of Nigeria’s Petroleum Ministry, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke in London had hit the airwaves like thunderbolt. No member of President Goodluck Jonathan’s government held the nation spellbound like Madame Diezani. Controversy dogged her every step just as she spawned loads of salacious gossip. She is a newsmaker per excellence.
For starters, Madame Diezani is a paragon of beauty. She’s also very simple but chic and elegant in dressing and appearance. At 54, she would give our much younger ladies a run for their money in the prettiness stakes. She is intelligent to boot and boasts a decent academic pedigree. She is that hot and even her most vociferous critics agree that she combines brains with beauty. Add to that is her marriage to retired Rear Admiral Allison Amaechina Madueke, a former Chief of Naval Staff which boosted her national and political profile.
The only problem was the almost unanimous belief that she had abused her privileged position and appurtenances of office in the discharge of her ministerial duties. It was reported that billions of dollars literally disappeared under her watch. She was under intense heat and scrutiny throughout her reign but seemed unrattled and unfazed by the deluge of dirt splashed at her from every direction. She stayed invincible and definitely unshakeable to the end.
Her firm grip on the President was palpable. It was a subject of discussions everywhere. There were rumours of constant clashes with the former First Lady, Dame Patience Faka Jonathan. No one really knew the true story. Mrs Alison Madueke did not help matters by studiously ignoring the lurid pictures painted of her. She rarely granted interviews and when she did, hardly responded to the monumental gist from unrelenting talebearers.

Article: Elders Also Cry
Growing old can be as graceful as it can be a nightmare, especially where there is the absence of health care schemes targeted at age-related diseases. Martins Ifijeh writes on the plight of aged Nigerians, whose health should be the collective responsibility of the government, families and the society in general
The truth dawned on Pa Salami like twilight of a shuttered room when his body physiology began to fail. His once bright and sharp eyes grew deemed, revealing only murkiness even on a bright sunny day. His once sharp memory and admired intelligence gave way to dementia, which causes memory loss and childhood behaviour in adults. A lot of things have changed. He is now a shadow of his former self.
These changes depict the reality for the 83-year-old former civil servant with Railway Corporation, who was once full of life and did everything by himself during his hey days; from driving, making ends meet for his family, engaging in sporting activities, among others. But these weren’t met to be anymore, old age has set in, bringing along alzheimer, arthritis, urinary incontinence and loss of cognitive ability. All that matters to him now is fighting for his health, whilst needing the support of people around him to do the basic necessities like defecating and moving from one point of the house to another.
While chatting with THISDAY during his youngest daughter’s traditional marriage ceremony in his compound in Auchi, a town in Edo State, even though not as coherent as he used to be, Pa Salami, who spent some of this youthful days in Britain and Germany, explained the frustration that has greeted him since old age disease began to set in. How he would have loved to be enrolled in a healthcare scheme that would take care of his failing body.

Pendulum @DeleMomodu INTERESTING LESSONS FROM ILE-IFE
To stay cheerful when involved in a gloomy and exceedingly responsible business is no inconsiderable art: yet what could be more necessary than cheerfulness? Nothing succeeds in which high spirits play no part…”
– Friedrich Nietzsche, TWILIGHT OF THE IDOLS/THE ANTI-CHRIST
Fellow Nigerians, it is no longer news that I was born and bred in the ancient town of Ile-Ife, the spiritual home of the Yoruba people of South West Nigeria. That great city prepared me for the incredible journey of life. It was where I spent about 26 out of 28 years of my earliest sojourn on earth. If Nigeria had grown out of the cocoon of ethnic discrimination and attained the assimilative tendencies of the United States of America, I would be handsomely qualified to dream of actualising anything I wanted to achieve in that community. But that is a story for the gods.

Photo:Gay Priest Sacked From The Vatican
The Vatican dismissed a priest from his post in a Holy See office today Saturday Oct. 3rd after he told a newspaper he was gay and urged the Catholic Church to change its stance on homosexuality, Reuters reports. Monsignor Krzystof Charamsa was removed from his position at the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, the Vatican's doctrinal arm where he had worked since 2003, a statement said.
Charamsa, 43, and a Polish theologian, announced he was gay and had a partner in a long interview with Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper on Saturday. He later held a news conference with his partner, a Spanish man, and gay activists at a Rome restaurant.
They had planned a demonstration in front of the Vatican but changed the venue several hours before it was due to have started. The Vatican said Charamsa's dismissal had nothing to do with his comments on his personal situation, which it said “merit respect”.
But it said giving the interview and the planned demonstration was “grave and irresponsible” given their timing on the eve of a synod of bishops who will discuss family issues, including how to reach out to gays. It said his actions would subject the synod, which Pope Francis is due to open on Sunday, to “undue media pressure”.
The issue of homosexuality and the Church has dominated the aftermath of the pope's visit to the United States last week. In Saturday's interview, Charamsa said his partner had helped him come to terms with his sexuality and knew he would have to give up the priesthood, although the Vatican statement made no reference to this outcome.
"It's time for the Church to open its eyes about gay Catholics and to understand that the solution it proposes to them - total abstinence from a life of love - is inhuman," he was quoted as saying. The Catholic Church teaches that homosexuality is not a sin but that homosexual acts are.
The Vatican has been embarrassed by controversy over the pope's meeting with Kim Davis, a Kentucky county clerk who went to jail in September for refusing to honour a US Supreme Court ruling and issue same-sex marriage licenses. The Vatican said on Friday that “the only real audience” the pope had during his visit to Washington was with a small group that included a gay couple.

I Don't Know The Meaning Of SHOKI says @IamOrezi
Doesn't it sound as a shocker that Delta State-born musician, Esegine Allen aka Orezi,
who is behind the hit single, Shoki. Doesn't know the meaning of Shoki himself and this Song is amongst his big Song we know him for.Well he speaks about his career and debut album recently with Punch.Enjoy
What have you been up to in recent times?
I just released my debut album, titled Ghen Ghen,
and the video for the lead single in the album,
Baby Abeg . I hope to engage in some tours within
and outside the country, to promote the album. It
is top of the charts on iTunes.
Why did it take six years to release your debut
album?
I did so much in order to get the album out. I
moved from my former label to a new one and I
had to start afresh. I had to come up with about
two or three fresh singles and it took about a
year to get that done. Also, I had to go for my
mandatory National Youth Service Corps
programme. We ran some checks to make sure I,
my fans and the market were ready. Judging by
the market statistics, releasing the album last
week was the right time.
