Atiku, Tambuwal, Others Call For Peace As Nigerians Celebrate 15 Years Democracy

As Nigeria marks 15 years of uninterrupted democratic rule today, May 29, Atiku Ababakar, Hon. Tambuwal and others have called on Nigerians to embrace peace and unity and hold on for better days.

In a statement issued by his media office, Atiku said it was the responsibility of every Nigerian to protect the country's democracy which was attained after years of struggle to end military rule.

The former vice president added that everyone must actively participate in the process of governance, making sure that the constitution and the rule of law are upheld at all times.

Describing as pitiful, a situation where the government and the armed forces debate critical issues bordering on national security in public, Atiku said "relations between civil-military authorities should be managed with care and maturity to safeguard our democracy. Some of the issues being discussed in public are not matters for the market square."

In his own message, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal congratulated Nigerians for witnessing 15 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, adding that sincerity of purpose, peaceful co-existence and rapid socio-economic development of all sectors as critical elements in deepening democracy and rule of law.

According to Tambuwal, despite various challenges confronting the nation, democracy remained the only option available to Nigerians to weather the storm and build a prosperous country.

In a statement entitled, ‘Nigeria is stronger than it has even been,” issued in Abuja, the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Tony Anenih said since Nigeria's return to democratic rule, Jonathan has turned out to be one leader with the most visible opposition.

He however said, the ruling PDP was also looking beyond a second term for President Goodluck Jonathan ending in 2019.
