Lesbianism is on the rise in Nigeria. In fact it has become part and
parcel of our urban culture. Some four to five years ago, I read a story
in Weekly Trust of two Lesbian girls who were fighting and the
neighbours called the police in Kaduna. To the shock of the police the
ladies said they were married and one of them was having an affair and
that was what caused the trouble. The police handed them over to the
Sharia Court where they were flogged and jailed for six months each.
Where I live in Abuja, I have some ladies flaunting that they are
Lesbians. In fact all the guys in the hood know, even the women know and
talk about it. These are some pretty young and educated girls.
I have nothing against homosexuals. It is not my business what one does
with his life. My business is why are we all pretending that
homosexuality is foreign and Western? In fact a lot of our popular
leaders have been associated with it, even a popular Vice President
recently. If you recall in their coup speech, Nzeogwu and Gideon Orkar
both talked about homosexuality among the leadership of their time.
